VEGA extends its portfolio from simple to complex

With the launch of its new VEGABAR pressure sensors and VEGAPOINT level switches, VEGA becomes a full-range supplier for level and pressure sensors to the food and pharmaceutical industries. The compact instruments in this series are perfectly tailored to standard applications that nevertheless require high quality and strict hygiene.


Their universal adapter system and process fittings provide the flexibility needed to keep installation and parts inventory costs lower. An eye-catching, 360° switching status display ensures safety and process reliability. The colour of the illuminated ring can be freely selected from a pallet of 256 colours and it can be easily seen from any direction – even in bright daylight.

To work efficiently, flotation cells depend on continuous froth formation. If the froth layer is too thin, it cannot transport the sufficient amount of dispersed or suspended particles to the surface. On the other hand, froth that is too thick indicates that the reaction time of the chemicals is too long. This has the consequence that too little of the medium gets processed. A density-compensated level measurement is the reliable solution in this process: this ensures that the density of the liquid remains constant and optimizes the process yields over a long period.

Pressure screens are used to filter out impurities and separate fibres in stock preparation. A rotating screen basket inside the filter does the actual filtering. Pressure screens have an inlet for the suspension, an outlet for accepted stock and a discharge for rejected stock and contaminants. The process conditions are characterized by pressure surges as well as abrasion and contaminants in the stock. Efficient screening requires a controlled pressure difference between inlet and outlet, which therefore requires continuous, reliable measurement.

High-purity water (WFI) is required for pharmaceutical products that are injected directly into the bloodstream or administered as eye or nose drops. This water is produced through filtration and distillation, then stored temporarily in tanks. Absolute sterility and cleanability are essential criteria for all process components that have direct contact with the medium. This also applies to the instruments for level and pressure measurement in the tank.

In an alkylation unit the acid settler is fed from the reactor vessel which is used to remove acid for recycling back into the reactor. The layers created in the separation process form interfaces that must be tracked to manage the output of the material from the unit. The antenna system of VEGAPULS 64 is encapsulated in PTFE or PEEK, so there are no cavities or crevices in which product can accumulate. The surface of the material is very finely processed with diamond tools, which also considerably reduces product adhesion. In addition, special software algorithms filter out interference caused by buildup on the antenna system. Thanks to the high dynamic range of the sensor, signal attenuation caused by product deposits is largely compensated. This allows the level to be reliably detected even with contamination on the sensor.

With this new feature in the VEGA Tools App, optimally aligning radar sensors for solids and putting them into operation is as easy as child’s play. By entering the vessel height and the distance from the discharge opening – the App calculates automatically the optimum tilt angle. After that, the smartphone needs to be placed on the sensor. With the help of the built-in tilt sensors and a graphical representation of the measuring point, the sensor can be put into its optimal position.
